Drupal 10 End of Life: Upgrade to Drupal 11 or Migrate to WordPress?

Drupal 10 End of Life: Upgrade to Drupal 11 or Migrate to WordPress?

Drupal 10 reaches end of life on December 9, 2026, and after that date it stops receiving security fixes. That leaves every Drupal 10 site owner with two realistic options: upgrade to Drupal 11 or migrate to WordPress. The right one depends on your content, your integrations, your compliance needs, and who will run the site for the next three years.

The deadline forces a move, but it does not tell you which one. And a wrong choice rarely hurts at launch. It shows up 12 to 36 months later, as rework, workarounds, and budget conversations nobody planned for.

Definition: Drupal 10 end of life (EOL)

Drupal 10 end of life is December 9, 2026, the date the Drupal project stops releasing security updates and bug fixes for Drupal 10 core. Sites keep running after EOL, but new vulnerabilities in Drupal 10 are no longer patched by the Drupal Security Team.

When Does Drupal 10 Reach End of Life?

Drupal 10 reaches end of life on December 9, 2026, the same week Drupal 12 is released. Here is the timeline:

Date What happens
October 29, 2026 BinaryWorks live webinar: Drupal Upgrade vs WordPress Switch
Week of December 7, 2026 Drupal 12.0.0 and Drupal 11.5.0 released; security support ends for Drupal 11.3.x
December 9, 2026 Drupal 10 end of life; security support ends

Two details in that timeline should change your plan. Drupal 12 lands the same week Drupal 10 expires, so “just upgrade” now means choosing between a proven Drupal 11 and a brand-new Drupal 12. And an older Drupal 11 release will not buy you time: Drupal 11.3.x loses security support that same week.

Still Running on Drupal 10?

Nearly one in three Drupal sites were running Drupal 10 in August 2026. That made Drupal 10 the most widely used Drupal version, at 30.6% of the Drupal sites W3Techs detected.

So if this deadline feels tight, you have plenty of company. The question is no longer whether to act before December 9. It is which path deserves your budget.

What Happens When Drupal 10 Reaches End of Life?

Your site keeps running, but it stops getting security fixes. Nothing switches off on December 10. The Drupal Security Team stops patching Drupal 10 core, and contributed module maintainers increasingly focus on Drupal 11 and 12.

For a B2B organization, the impact shows up in three places:

  • Risk: Any new vulnerability in Drupal 10 core stays open unless your team patches it.
  • Compliance: Security questionnaires, vendor reviews, and audits flag unsupported software.
  • Momentum: Every month on Drupal 10 widens the gap to a supported stack and makes the eventual move bigger.

Should You Upgrade to Drupal 11 or Migrate to WordPress?

Upgrade to Drupal 11 if your site runs on structured content, workflows, and deep integrations. Migrate to WordPress if your site is mostly marketing content and your team wants simpler publishing. The deciding factor is how much of your current site a migration would have to rebuild.

Drupal vs WordPress After Drupal 10 EOL at a Glance

Factor Upgrade to Drupal 11 Migrate to WordPress
Content and URLs Stay in place Mapped, migrated, and redirected
Main effort driver Custom code and contributed module readiness Content mapping plus theme and feature rebuild
Biggest risk Underestimating custom code and module gaps Lost rankings from missed redirects; feature gaps found late
Ongoing ownership Drupal skills, minor updates, Drupal 12 on your schedule Core and plugin updates, plus plugin governance

What Does a Drupal 11 Upgrade Involve?

A Drupal 11 upgrade keeps you on the same platform, so your content, URLs, and configuration stay where they are. Since Drupal 8, major upgrades are incremental. The work is mostly clearing out deprecated code, not rebuilding the site.

When Upgrading to Drupal 11 Fits Best

  • Structured content with many content types, fields, and relationships
  • Multilingual sites, granular editorial permissions, or approval workflows
  • Deep integrations such as SSO, CRM, ERP, or commerce
  • A team or partner that already knows Drupal

What Drives the Upgrade Effort

The effort comes from three places: custom modules and themes that use deprecated APIs, contributed modules without Drupal 11 releases, and hosting that must meet Drupal 11’s newer platform requirements. Community tools such as the Upgrade Status module and Drupal Rector find and fix much of that deprecated code.

Bonus: Drupal upgrades move one major version at a time, so Drupal 11 is also your route to Drupal 12.

Want a scoped view before you commit? A Drupal 11 upgrade audit shows which modules and custom code need work. For the full project, see BinaryWorks’ Drupal migration and upgrade services.

What Does a Drupal to WordPress Migration Involve?

A Drupal to WordPress migration is a re-platform: you rebuild the theme and features, move content into a new content model, and redirect every URL that changes. In return, you move to the platform behind 58.3% of websites whose CMS is known, with a large talent pool and plugin ecosystem.

When Migrating to WordPress Fits Best

  • Your content is mostly pages, posts, and landing pages
  • Your marketing team wants to publish without filing developer tickets
  • Your integrations are light or already API-based
  • Drupal expertise is hard for you to hire or keep

What Drives the Migration Effort

The effort comes from content model mapping, theme and feature rebuilds, redirect mapping to protect search rankings, re-implementing integrations, and retraining editors. Miss a redirect and you can lose rankings you spent years earning. See how BinaryWorks handles WordPress migration and upgrades.

How Do You Choose Between a Drupal Upgrade and a WordPress Migration?

Answer five questions with IT, marketing, and compliance in the same room, and the trade-offs become concrete fast:

  1. What will each path cost over 12 to 36 months? Count hosting, maintenance, modules or plugins, security work, and editor time, not just the build.
  2. What do security and compliance require? Define your patching cadence, hardening, backups, and disaster recovery before you compare platforms.
  3. How fast do editors need to publish? Set targets for Core Web Vitals, caching, and publishing workflow, then test each path against them.
  4. Which features and integrations are non-negotiable? List your multilingual, SSO, commerce, CRM, and ERP needs. The more you rely on, the more a migration has to rebuild.
  5. How much time do you have? If your chosen path cannot finish by December 9, plan a bridge: a hardened, monitored Drupal 10 setup while the work runs. An end-of-life support and maintenance audit shows what that bridge needs.

What Should You Do Before December 9, 2026?

Start with an inventory and a decision, then protect the site while the work runs:

  1. Inventory core version, modules, custom code, integrations, and hosting.
  2. Scan with the Upgrade Status module to size the Drupal 11 work.
  3. Decide by mid-November, so the work fits the window.
  4. Close known gaps with a Drupal website security audit, whichever path you choose.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Drupal 10 end of life?

Drupal 10 reaches end of life on December 9, 2026. Security support for Drupal 10 core ends that day.

Is it safe to keep running Drupal 10 after December 9, 2026?

Not for long. The site keeps working, but it no longer receives security fixes, and the risk grows with every new vulnerability.

Can I skip Drupal 11 and go straight to Drupal 12?

No. Drupal upgrades move one major version at a time, so a Drupal 10 site reaches Drupal 12 through Drupal 11.

Is migrating from Drupal to WordPress cheaper than upgrading to Drupal 11?

Not automatically. A migration rebuilds the theme, features, and integrations, while an upgrade keeps them. WordPress can cost less to run if your site is content-led and light on integrations.

Which is more secure, Drupal or WordPress?

Both are secure when they are maintained well. Update discipline, module or plugin hygiene, and hosting matter more than the CMS name.
